Maha Mrityunjaya Homam in Srikalahasti

Though brief, Sage Markandu and his spouse chose to have a good son. They named their son Markandeya after Shiva, who blessed the couple. Markandeya was unaware of his short lifespan. When the time of death arrived, Yama stood before him. While Markandey was sitting and worshiping Lord Shiva, he threw his hook at his nose. As Yama began to extract life, or soul, from Markandey’s body, his breathing became difficult. After giving the “shivaling” an embrace, Markandey recited the powerful mantra known as the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra. Shiva appeared before Markandey as he began reciting the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra, killing Yama in anger. Markandey was then given a full lifespan by Shiva. Later, Lord Shiva revived Yama.
