Vaitheeswaran Koil near Chidambaram is dedicated to Angaraka (Mars). The main deity, Lord Siva is called by Vaitheeswaran, who possess healing properties. Praying Vaitheeswaran ‘God of medicine’ can cure skin diseases.  Mars plays a role in establishing strong marital relationships.

Vaitheeswaran Koil Legends

Angarakan (Chevvai), son of Lord Siva, who born from the drop of Lord Siva’s.  Once, When Lord Siva was in deep meditation, a drop of sweat from the Siva’s forehead fell on the Earth. A male child was born out of this drop. It is said that Lord Siva cured Angarakan skin disease, following which he joined Navagraha Club.

One should take holy dip at Temple Tank ‘Siddsmrita’ before entering temple, which is believed to possess healing properties for skin diseases.

It is said that Saptarshi worshiped Lord Siva here.

It is said that Lord Sri Rama and Lakshmana performed final rituals for Jatayu (The king of Birds) by immersing ashes here at Jatayu Kundam.

This temple is revered by the Tevaram hymns of 7th Century Saiva Nayanars. Nayanars, 63 Shaivitie Saints sang in praise of Lord Siva

Vaitheeswaran Koil Medical properties

The ashes here referred to as Thiruchandu Urundal, which acts as a medicine for skin diseases. This ash will be collected from Homa Gundam. Another medicine is made out of Chandan (Sandalwood powder and is mixed with saffron.

As Chevvai represents in Red Color, Devotees should offer him Thoor Dal and Red Arali flowers during pooja. Besides this, Milag (Pepper) and Salt with Jaggery are offered in the Siddhamritam to get rid of diseases.

Tuesdays are preferred to worship Angarakan. One worship’s Angakaran here, by fasting for 21 Tuesday’s, the unlucky influence of Tuesday (Mangal) will be cleared.

Vaitheeswaran Koil History

Vaidhyanatha Swamy is the main deity here and His consort Thayyalanayaki Ambal stands here holding medicinal oil, which cures diseases.

Here in this temple, Angarakan is worshipped in two forms, one deity will be taken out in a procession during the festivals and the main deity, remains permanently inside the temple. Processional deity located near the Vaidhyanatha Sannidhi (the main deity) and Moolavar is located the eastern side of the outer prakaram (circumambulatory path). The Angarakan processional deity atop Goat during the procession, which will be held within the temple on every Tuesday.
