Legend Associated with Tiruttani Temple

According to legend, Indra offered his elephant, Airavatam, during his daughter Devayani’s and Lord Muruga’s weddings. Indra realized that his wealth was declining after gifting Airavat to Muruga. Knowing the situation, Lord Murugan returned Airavat to Indra and insisted that he face his direction instead. Every elephant in the temple has been pointing eastward ever since.

After killing Ravana, Lord Rama is believed to have worshipped Lord Shiva at Rameswaram before traveling to Tiruttani in search of peace of mind. During this process of churning the milky ocean, Vasuki was severely injured. Vasuki’s wounds were healed at this place. After defeating the demon, Lord Muruga is reported to have shed his anger here at Tiruttani.
