Sirkazhi Vaitheeswaran temple

Sirkazhi Vaitheeswaran temple is dedicated to Lord Siva and is located at Thanjavur District. Sandal applied to the deity Selva Muthu Kumara is said to be most sacred. There are 18 Tirthas in the temple of which Siddha Amrita Tirtha is the most sacred, devotees used to throw jaggery and salt into the Tirtha, bathe in it and worship the Lord. Lord Siva is called by Vaidyanathar and Goddess is called Thaiyanayaki. This temple received huge patronage from Cholas, Nayaks and Vijayanagara Kings. There are few inscriptions in the temple; belonging to the times of Vikrama Chola in 1117 AD, Virapandya Acchuthappa Nayak and Tulasamahraja.

Brahmotsavam will be celebrated in the month of Panguni. On the fifth day of the festival, Lord Seval Muthu Kumara receives Sandal paste from Lord Vaidyanatha. Abhishekam will be performed to the Lord Muruga on Karthika and Shasti days.

As per the Legends, this place is called as Jatayupuri after Jatayu who worshipped the Lord here. Vedas worshipped the Lord, hence Vedapuri. It is called Kandapuri after Kanda, Parithipuri after Sun god, Angarakapura after Mars, Ambikapuram after Ambika, all of whom worshipped of the Sthala. It is said that Lord Muruga obtained The Vel (Weapon) to Kill the demon Sura. Those who possessed by ghosts worship the deity and get relieved from the troubles. Jatayu Kunda is the place where Sri Rama performed funeral rites of Jatayu according to latter’s wish. This Jatayu Kunda Tirtha possess medical properties and cures skin related diseases.
