The main deity is worshipped in three forms, As Goddess Saraswati (God of Education) in the morning hours, As Bhadrakali in the Noon with Crimson red cloth and as Durga in the evening hours wearing a bright blue dress. Hence, the deity is worshipped as Raja Rajeswari.
Lord Vishnu Idol which is of 2 ft in height is located to the right of the deity. The together called as Lakshmi Narayana.
The loose soil at the feet of the main deity is offered as Prasadam for the devotees. It is believed that it relieves the devotee from diseases and will enjoy prosperity.
It is believed that the Idol is Self-manifested. The original deity can be seen only in the morning when then Nirmalyam ( previous days flowers, garlands etc) is removed.
This Temple is known for Guruthi Pooja which is performed to get rid of evil spirits. The deity was worshipped by Adisankaracharya, Vilwamangalam Swamiyar, Kakkasseri Bhattathiri and Chemmangattu Bhattathiri.
On the north-east side of the main deity is the Idol of Dharma Sasta. Here, he resides with his two consorts Purna and Pushkala. As per the legend, Once Bhagavathy went on a procession to Meppazhur Mana for Para (Offering of a measure of Paddy). One the way, rowdies harassed the devotees in the procession. Hence, while returning the Meppazhur Nambudir sent his family deity Dharma Sasta as an Escort. From then on the deity resided at Chottanikkara.
