Avani Amavasya Thila Homam in Rameswaram is performed to remove Pitru dosham. Avani Amavasya is auspicious for Pitru pujas. The puja duration is 3 hours. Three priests will perform this ritual. The puja starts at 6 a.m. on this special day. Anyone can perform this ritual regardless of their dosha. This puja is performed to appease the ancestors who reside in Pitru Loka. Instructions to be followed
- Women can participate in this puja after the fifth day of their menstrual cycle.
- If there is any death in the family, one should perform the puja after 3 months.
- One should stop consuming non-veg and alcohol for another 11 days after the puja.
- Three days before the puja, one should abstain from alcohol and non-vegetarian foods.

Amavasya is highly preferred for pitru pujas. Pitru dosha nivarana puja, pitru tharpan, Moksha narayanabali puja, and other pitru-related pujas can be performed on this auspicious day. A single person or a couple can perform this puja. Those who participate in this puja should ignore the dress worn during the ritual. One should take a head bath before and after the puja. It is advisable to fast while performing this ritual. Rush will be high on this special day. This puja is performed in a yagashala located outside the Rameswaram Temple.
Pitru Dosha may be passed on by your ancestors or by your own actions. This dosha might also have been passed down from your previous birth. An astrologer can let you know the severity of the dosha. Japa Sankhya’s Thila homam starts with a count of 1,008. A father can only perform the pitru dosha if it is found in the son or daughter’s kundali. A son cannot perform this puja if his father is alive. One should perform this puja with utmost devotion and sincerity. In Rameswaram, Thila homam is performed daily. We advise doing it on an Amavasya day for effective results. Fasting is not advisable for the elderly and patients.
