The Rameswaram Temple‘s history is closely linked to Hindu mythology. One of the most praised gods in Hinduism, Lord Rama, is said to be connected to this temple. It is believed that while traveling to Lanka to save his wife Sita from the evil king Ravana, Lord Rama stopped in Rameswaram with the help of his devoted follower Hanuman.

Before starting the famous fight with Ravana, Lord Rama is said to have worshipped Lord Shiva in Rameswaram, asking for his blessings and direction. Lord Rama chose this spot to install a lingam, or abstract image of Lord Shiva, as an act of respect for Lord Shiva’s assistance. This lingam is said to be the Swayambhu lingam, indicating that it manifested itself.

  • Dress Code: Male devotees must remove their shirts and vests during this puja. This puja can be performed in anyone’s name and Gothra.
