Thirukadaiyur 60th Marriage Temple History

The legend goes that the Devas and Asuras neglected to worship Lord Vinayaka (Ganesha), hence upsetting the powerful elephant-headed god, who stole the pot of nectar and buried it before starting to churn the Ocean of Milk for nectar.

Lord Shiva suggested they apologize to Lord Vinayaka. Eventually, the pot turned into a Shiva lingam. Lord Amirthakadeswarar (Amritham + Kadam/Kalasam = nectar + pot) is hence the main deity. Lord Vinayaka is also known as Kallavaaranam since he kept the nectar pot in a secret place.

After killing the God of Death, Yama, and thereby protecting the life of his devotee, Lord Shiva granted Sri Markandeya immortality and the blessing that he would always remain sixteen. Later, he pardoned Yama for the benefit of Goddess Earth.
