Tamil Brahmin Wedding Procedure in Tirumala
Pandhal Kaal Muhurtham
The first pole was set up at the bride’s home to mark the beginning of the wedding rituals. This pole will be worshipped and it will be placed in front of the house. This ritual will be performed a few days before or at least a day before the wedding.
‘Paalikai’ Seeds Sowing
Paalikai is an earthen pot ritual performed for fertility. Five or nine kinds of pre-soaked grains are sown in these pots. After marriage, these sprouted seedlings will be released in a river or lake nearby. It is believed that performing this ritual will bless the couple with a healthy life and progeny.
Welcoming the Groom
The groom and his family will arrive at the venue a day before the wedding. They are welcomed with a tray containing flowers, Vetrilai, Pakku, and fruits. Panneer (rose water) will be poured on the groom. The bride’s brother will apply the thilakam on the groom’s forehead and garland him. The bride’s mother offers a sweet box to the groom’s parents. The sweet is made out of condensed milk, like Palakova.
Vratham
This ritual will be performed separately for the bride and groom. It means tying Kappu to the bride and groom. It is believed that it protects the couple from evil spirits. For the groom, the days of Brahmacharya are over after accepting Grihasta. The groom’s parents will carry slippers, an umbrella, a bamboo fan, etc., to bring the boy home.
Nandhi
During these rituals, a few Brahmins will be offered sweets and gifts. It was believed that these Brahmins represent the soul of their ancestors. By doing so, they will receive the blessings from their ancestors.
Bridegroom Baraat
On the evening before the wedding day, the groom will reach the mandapam in a grand procession. The bride’s parents and relatives will escort the groom to the mandapam. The Nadaswaram band walks before the procession, marking the grand welcome.
Nischiyadhartham
The bride’s parents perform the Ganapathi puja. The groom’s side offers a saree along with fruits, vetrilai, pakku, turmeric, kumkum, and coconut. A thilakam of chandanam and kumkum is applied on the bride’s forehead. A garland of flowers will be tied on the waist of the bride. At the end, Harati will be offered.
Lagna Patrigai
The priest reads out the wedding invitation in detail, followed by the dinner.
On the wedding Day
Tamil Brahmin weddings follow these rituals.
Mangala Snanam
This ritual is intended to purify both the bride and the groom. Before the bath, oil and sandalwood paste (chandanam) will be applied to the bride and groom separately.
Ganapathi Puja

Navagraha Puja
This puja is performed seeking blessings from the nine planets.
Kasi Yatra
The groom, fearing for the marriage, will plan to leave for Kashi. The bride’s father intervenes in the middle and explains the significance of the wedding and offers his daughter. During the wedding, the groom will be treated as Maha Vishnu and the bride as Lakshmi.
Vaaku Nischaya Muhurtham
At the wedding hall, the bride’s father and the groom’s father face each other and solemnize the final engagement ritual.
Exchange of Garlands
The bride and groom exchange garlands thrice. The bride and groom are lifted on the shoulders of their uncles. During this time, they exchange garlands thrice.
Unjal ritual
The couple will be seated on the swinging ladder. The ladies around will sing songs praising the couple.
Vara Puja
The bride and groom will be offered milk and banana pieces. Later, the four rice balls will be thrown in four directions to ward off the evil eyes on the couple.
Kanya Dhanam and Mangalya Dharanam
During Kanya Dhanam, the bride’s parents clean the groom’s feet. During this time, the bride will sit on her father’s lap. Her father will present the bride to the groom. During Mangalya Dharanam, the bride sits on her father’s lap facing eastwards. The groom ties the knot facing westwards.
After this, Pani Grahanam, Saptha Padhi, and Pradhana Homam tread on the grindstone, showing Arudanthi Nakshatra, respecting each other (Sammandhi Maryadha), and Laaja Homam blessing the couple with Akshatha, Paaladhanam, and Griha Pravesam.
