Ashlesha Bali Pooja in Rameswaram is performed daily. Many believe that those born under the Ashlesha star should perform this puja. Anyone can perform this puja regardless of their birth star. This puja should be performed for career growth, higher education, pregnancy, marriage, and many more. Two to three priests will perform this ritual. This puja starts at 7 a.m. The puja duration is 3 hours. A single person or a couple can perform this puja. It is advisable to fast while performing this puja. It is advisable to perform this puja on an Ashlesha star day. Ashlesha is the ninth among the twenty-seven major constellations identified in the zodiac. According to Vedic astrology, a specific deity presides over every constellation. The Serpent (Sarpa) is the presiding deity of Ashlesha Nakshatra. Ashlesha Bali is a special ritual performed to seek atonement for past misdeeds and to earn the grace of the serpent deity by offering bali (sacred food offerings/oblations) to the Naga.

Serpent worship is one of the most ancient traditions in world history. Serpent worship has not remained merely a belief among rural folk; today, it is deeply rooted even in the households of modern, educated communities. Depending on individual devotion and financial circumstances, serpent worship is observed through various rituals—ranging from offering a cooling milk-and-tender-coconut offering on Nagara Panchami to grand and elaborate sacred rituals such as Nagamandala. Overall, serpent worship is performed to appease the serpent deities. However, Ashlesha Bali, a specific ritual within serpent worship, is performed as a remedy to alleviate the curse of serpents incurred due to harm, offenses, or disrespect committed by humans.

Instructions to be followed

Women can participate in this puja after the fifth day of their menstrual cycle.
One should stop consuming non-veg and alcohol for another 11 days after the puja.
Three days before the puja, one should abstain from alcohol and non-vegetarian foods.

Ashlesha Bali Pooja Procedure in Rameswaram

The ritual of Ashlesha Bali commences by invoking the Navashakti and other deities and performing the Sankalpa (sacred vow). At the Naga shrine decorated with fresh foliage and garlands, an eye-catching Sarpa Navapada Mandala and an Ashlesha Bali Mandala are drawn using turmeric, kumkuma, and rangoli powders. In the central square of the Sarpa Navapada Mandala, Sri Vasuki Nagaraja occupies the foremost place. In the remaining eight squares, the serpents belonging to the eight lineages—Ananta, Shesha, Kapila, Naga, Karkotaka, Shankhapala, Bhudhara, and Takshaka—are invoked. The 52 squares of the Ashlesha Bali Mandala are meant for invoking the 52 eminent serpents of the serpent lineage. They invoke the Ashta Dikpalakas, their sons, daughters, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and their serpent wives. This puja is performed in a yagashala located outside the Rameswaram Temple.
