Mrityunjaya Homam in Rameswaram is performed daily. The puja duration is 3 hours. Anyone can perform this puja regardless of their age. The word “Mrityu” means “death,” and “jaya” means “victory,” which means “victory over death.” A single person or a couple can perform this puja. According to legend, Daksha Prajapati cursed Chandra, who then recited this mantra and got relieved. Markandeya, a sixteen-year-old boy, recited this mantra by clinging to the Shiva Lingam. Yama’s noose enveloped Markandeya and Shiva Lingam. Lord Shiva, in anger, killed Yama and blessed Markandeya with full life. Later, Lord Shiva revived Yama. Mrityunjaya homam will be performed while the mantra is recited.

Instructions to be followed
- Women can participate in this puja after the fifth day of their menstrual cycle.
- If there is any death in the family, one should perform the puja after 3 months.
- One should stop consuming non-veg and alcohol for another 11 days after the puja.
- Three days before the puja, one should abstain from alcohol and non-vegetarian foods.
