Legend Associated with Shatru Samhara Pooja
Goddess Parvathi got married to Shiva as a result of her penance to Him. The objective of marriage is to destroy the demon Surapadma. Lord Shiva assumed a six-faced form, with a burning spark emerging from each of the six eyes. He begged the wind and fire gods to transport the sparks to the Ganges River. Ganga later brought it to Sarvana Lake. The six fire sparks became six lovely babies, raised by the six Karthigai maids. Mother Parvathi combined the six faces into one, giving Muruga twelve hands but just one face. Other names for him include Gugan, Velayuthan, Kaangeyan, Mayilvaganan, and Kumaran.
To all the gods, the demon Surapadma caused horror. Thus, Lord Shiva decided to deploy Muruga to destroy him. To defeat the demon, Muruga acquired 11 weapons and a Vel, or spear, from Shiva and Parvathi. After that, he fought at Thiruchendur for ten days. When Muruga’s spear split the large mango tree that was Soorapadman’s form, the two halves transformed into a peacock (a vehicle) and a cock (a flag), respectively.
On Amavasyas, people also perform “Poorna Kriya,” which is typically associated with the birth of twins and brings happiness and tranquility into their lives.
