Sanchi Stupa

This Stupa was discovered by General Taylor in 1818 and This place was abandoned for 600 years since the 14th Century. The gateways depict images from Buddha Life. This stupa was constructed by Emperor Ashoka in 3rd Century BC in honour of Lord Buddha. Last addition took place after 5 centuries by Guptas prior to 450 AD. This site was declared as the UNESCO heritage site in India.

Stupa 1 is having four gateways which were decorated with scenes from Life of Buddha and Jataka tales. Buddha relics were placed in this Stupa. This stupa is of 54 ft in height. This stupa was crowned by a Chhatra to honour and protect the relics of Buddha.

Stupa 2 dates back to 2nd Century BC and is at the edge of the hill.

Stupa 3 Belongs the 150 – 140 BC. It is Northeast to Stupa 1. Relics of Shariputra and Mahamoggallana (Two famous disciples of Buddha) were kept in the inner chamber. This stupa is having one gateway. In the year 1919, Sir John Marshall established a museum.
