Murudeshwar temple History

As per the folklore, Kaikasi, mother of Ravana Brahma used to prepare Saikata Linga (Siva Linga made out of Sand) and offer prayers daily. Devas were a little worried about her devotion and instructed Samudra Deva to destroy the Pooja. Samudra Deva raised high and destroyed the Pooja place. Disturbed Kaikasi ordered Ravana to bring Atma Linga from Kailash for her daily Pooja. Ravana did penance for Lord Siva and received Atma Linga. Lord Siva advised him not to keep on the Earth till he reaches Lanka. Ravana while on his way to Lanka noticed sunset and thought of offering prayers to Surya Bhagavan. Ravana looked for a helper and handed the Atma Linga to a Brahmin Cowherd boy (Lord Ganesh disguised himself as a cowherd) and went to offer prayers. After 3 repeated calls, the boy kept the Linga on the Earth. Ravana rushed to place and tried hard to unearth the Linga. The extensive force removed the cloth covering around Atma Linga and threw it away, which landed at many places and one of them is at  Mrideshwara in Kanduka Giri.  As time passes by Mrideshwara changed to Murudeshwara. The main Linga remained at Mahabaleshwar.

More than 500 sculptors from Thanjavur worked for 10 years in building the Gopuram which is 21 storeyed. Gopuram base occupies 105 ft in width and reduces gradually to 78 ft on top. This temple architecture resembles the Dravidian construction style.

Siva Statue is 123 ft tall
