Legend for Sri Kurma Varadaraja Swamy Temple
During the period of the 1790s the Rayalaseema region is under the rule of Muhammadans, at this time due to religious differences among the people, most of the prominent temples were demolished. By knowing the situation, the former Kurmai villagers have demolished the Praharana (fencing around the temple ) and later cover the whole temple, which is nearly 250 square kilometres with sand, to save the Temple from desecration by the hordes of Muhammadan rulers. It is believed that Sri Varadaraja Swamy has left the temple to Kancheepuram (Kanchi) and while leaving the place he made his footprints on the stone called Kodhevarabanda.
