Elephant Falls History

Originally Khasi natives used to call this falls as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew which means Three Step Falls. Three Step Waterfalls as it consists of Three Sections in Succession. Later, When Britishers got into this place they named it as Elephant Falls as there was a rock on the left side of the falls which resembles an Elephant. The Elephant shaped rock got destroyed due to Earth Quake in 1897. This place is located in the East Khasi Hills District, Shillong. It is 12 Km from Chaos City.

One must climb down 200 – 250 stairs (approx) to reach the bottom of the fall. There is a foot overbridge connecting 2nd and 3rd fall. It is 150 stairs downward from 2nd to 3rd fall. Food stalls are available near the falls.
