Swamy Pushkarini Legends, References from Skanda Purana.

How Dharmagupta cured of his illness?

Dharmagupta, son of King Nanda. The latter in his old age adopted an ascetic life and left the kingdom to his on Dharmagupta. Once, this Dharmagupta while hunting spent some time in a forest at night. A lion pursued him; so the king climbed a tree. A bear also resorted to the same tree out of the fear of the lion who was sitting below, waiting to catch the prey. The king and the bear agreed to remain awake in turn, each for half the night and permit the other to sleep. First, the king slept and the bear protected him, remaining wakeful. In spite of the lion’s entreaties to drop the king, the bear remained faithful to its promise to the king. After mid-night it was the king’s turn to watch over the sleeping bear.. on the lion’s entreaties, the faithless king dropped down the bear as prey to the lion. The bear woke up, assumed the form of a Yaksha and cursed the king to be mad as the penalty for his heinous and criminal breach of trust. His retired father, Nanda, was informed of this. Unfortunately, they discovered the Swamy Pushkarini late and after a bath in it, it is said, Dharmagupta was cured of his madness which was due to the fact that he had dropped on the ground the bear which was quietly and confidently sleeping, having placed its head and shoulders in the king’s lap.

Swamy Pushkarini Legends

How Sage Kasyapa cured of his evil?

A pilgrimage to Venkatachala and bath in Swamy pushkarini also cured sage Kasyapa of his evil. Even though he had remedies to cure king parikshit of the serpent-bite of Takshaka, he did not go to cure him and on being bribed by Takshaka with jewels, he returned home from mid-way and parikshit died of the serpent bit. Anyone who has remedies must cure the sick and the injured till the last moment.

Skanda Purana, quoting Ayurvedic authorities, gives this tip to doctors and Vaidyas. So long as there is the slightest chance of life, the dying men should be treated with proper remedies; for none knows the crooked ways of Kala. Kasyapa failed in his duty and he had to make amends.

Must Visit Seventeen Tirthas in Tirumala and Tirupati

Suta Rishi addressed sages about the Mahatyam of the seventeen tirthas beginning with the Kapila Tirthas

Kapila Tirthas : At the foot of the hill is enshrined Kapila Lingam which was formerly worshipped by the Sage Kapila in the Patala Loka. For some cause it split the earth and rose to its surface and all the Devas prayed that it might rest there alone. Making an opening in the earth in front of it, appeared a Kapila- Pasu (Tawny Cow) later on and this hole is the Kapila Tirtha which possesses the power of destroying all sins.

Sakra Tirthas: Above the Kapila Tirtha lies the very holy Sakra Tirtha, by a bath in which Indra became released of the curse of Gautama for his Illicit connection with Ahalya.

Vishvaksena Saras: Above this second one is the sacred Vishvaksena Saras where Vishvaksena, the son of Varuna, rendered penance and obtained an identical form with that of Vishnu together with the commander-ship of Vishnu’s forces

Panchayudha Tirthas: The five Tirthas named after the five weapons of Vishnu, Viz. Sankha (Conch), Chakra (disc), Gada (Club), Sarnga (bow) and Nadaka (sword), which are all very holy pools, are situated above the vishvaksena saras.

Agnikunda Tirthas: This lies above the Panchayudha Tirthas and is inaccessible.

Brahma Tirtha: Above the last one is situated the Brahma Tirtha which confers great merit.

Saptarishi Tirthas: Near the Brahma Tirtha are the Saptarishi Tirthas which contain holy waters. Of these seven tirthas, the first one possesses ten times as great merit as that of all the previously mentioned tirthas taken together, and each successive one among the seven similar possesses merit ten times greater than that of each prior one.

How to reach Kapila Theertham ?

It is 2 km from Tirupati Bus station. Share auto-rickshaws will be running to Kapila Theertham junction with high frequency.

The Hanuman temple at Japali Teertham Tirumala is one of the least known and most worthy places during a visit to Tirumala. After a kilometer’s trek into the woods, the darshan of Lord Anjaneya is a memorable experience. It is located 3 km from the Gogarbham Dam.

It takes 12 to 16 minutes to walk to the Japali Hanuman temple using the steps. There is a dirt road available for two-wheelers. The temple is accessible via 150 steps from the entry point.

Japali Hanuman Temple Teertham Tirumala

It is situated amidst deep woods and a shrine dedicated to Lord Hanuman, which attracts numerous visitors. The famous festivals celebrated at this site are Tumburu Phalguna Pournami, Chakra Kartika Masa-Ksheerabdi Dwadasi, Kumaradhara Magha Pournami, and Ramakrishna Pushya Pournami. Tourists can also trek from the dense forest to reach this holy pond in Tirumala.

It is believed that Lord Rama, along with Sita and Lakshmana, stayed here with Hanuman.

There is also a pond called Rama Kund within the temple premises. This place is believed to have been blessed by Lord Hanuman, as he found peace of mind in this place

One can find a tree at the entrance of the temple with a form of Lord Ganesha at its base, and it is believed that Lord Ganesha himself appeared there

Devotees also believe that the holy water of the Japali teertham Tirumala can wash away all the evils and sins that they have committed in their lives

Sila Thoranam History, Tirumala

As per History, Lord Sri Venkateswara came to Tirumala in search of his wife Sri Maha Lakshmi. She had reverence towards the sage Brigu Maharshi, even though the sage had insulted him by kicking Him on the chest, the place where his wife Sri Mahalakshmi was there. He stood at the Top of Tirumala, which is now called SRIPADAM.

On the way down from Sripadam to Tirumala, there is a place called SILA THORANAM. Here natural rock depicts Lord Vishnu’s Sanku, Chakram, Thiruman and his Abhayakaram

During excavations in the 1980s on a mound of earth in the jungles 1 km. North of the temple where it was believed that some information lied buried about the Lord’s transformation into rock, a very rare phenomenon of two different sets of rocks connected together in the form of a thin link was found. They are formed naturally very mysterious indeed! Sila Thoranam is believed to be 2500 million years old. Geologists classified this formation as Pre-Cambrian and to be older than the Jurassic Age. It is 25 feet in length, 10 feet in height. It is one of the three natural rock arches in the world.

How to reach this place?

T.T.D runs free buses to Sila Thoranam quite frequently.

A.P.S.R.T.C runs buses to Sila Thoranam site.

Even Private Taxis are available to this site.

Interesting places near to this place

Sri Vari Padalu (Holy feet of Sri Venkateswara) is located next to this site.

Birds area is also located next to this site.

One must visit this place during their trip to Tirumala, to view this Natural Rock Formation.

Here at Akash Ganga Theertham, Holy water comes out as natural steam here between hills rocks. This sacred water is used for Sri Vaari Daily Abhishekam. Devotees have to climb down the steps to reach Theertham.

In the olden days, the priests took turns to carry water all the way from this part of the jungle to the temple but now T.T.D has laid water lines into the temple and thus simplified the process.

This holy Akash Ganga theertha is found it’s rendering in the Vedas and it is commonly believed that Theertham originates from the lotus feet of the main deity in Ananda Nilayam.

Akash Ganga Theertham as stated in Puranas

The waterfall is about 5 km from Tirumala Main temple and the Tirumala Nambi family is allowed to take a holy dip at this scared Akasha Gang Theertham.

A bath in this Theertham provides the merit equivalent to performing a hundred rituals. Marriages can be performed here. The donation of gold is recommended at this theertha.

Bathing in this water is really refreshing and is said to wash away the evils and confer good fortune. There is a platform built by the temple governance where the running water is diverted for devotees to take the water first in hand.

Bathing is not allowed at this site, Devotees used to wash their hands and feet at this Theertha.

How to reach Theertham?

T.T.D runs free buses to this Holy Site

Even private taxis are available to this place at a minimal charge.

During Tirumala Visit Pilgrims ‘Must see places in Tirumala’ during their Tirumala Trip. Must see places in Tirumala post provides details on Visiting places in Tirumala.

Akasha Ganga

Holy water comes out as natural steam here between hills rocks. This sacred water is used for Sri Vaari Daily Abhishekam. A bath in Akasha Ganga provides the merit equivalent to performing a hundred rituals.

Chakra Theertham

It is located next to Silathoranam. It is believed that Lord Brahma once observed repentance at this site, further, for cleansing this place, Lord Vishnu plunged the Sudarshana Chakram. The Sudarshana Chakra then fell into a place, which later came to be known as Chakra Theertham.

Kumaradhara Theertham

It is believed to be the place where Lord Vishnu took penance after killing a demon named Tarakasura. It is also believed that a devotee of Lord Vishnu lost his way in the hills and started meditating. Lord Vishnu appeared before him and asked to take a bath in this pond. This holy dip transformed the man into a sixteen-year-old boy and from then on the pond came to be known as Kumara Theertham. A bath in Kumaradhara Theertham would provide the advantage of having performed a Rajasuya Yajna, ritual.

Tumburu Theertham

The story behind the formation of the theertham states that a Gandharva cursed sage Agastya’s lazy wife to become a toad that had to survive in this pond till the sage arrived. When sage Agastya came here with his disciples, the toad took the Gandharva form and hence the pond was known as Tumburu Theertham

Sila Thoranam:

During excavations in the 1980s on a mound of earth in the jungles 1 km. North of the temple where it was believed that some information lied buried about the Lord’s transformation into rock, a very rare phenomenon of two different sets of rocks connected together in the form of a thin link was found. They are formed naturally very mysterious indeed! This geological arch is a very rare spectacle in the world. This arch (older than the Jurassic age) is 25ft in length, l0ft in height

Prominence of Swami Pushkarini Tirumala, Timings, History

It has been mentioned in mangalasaasanam in Venkatesa Suprabhatham as follows:
SRIVAIKUNTA VIRAKTHAYA SWAMI PUSHKARINI THADE
RAMAYA RAMAMANAYA VENKATESAYA MANGALAM.

Translated it would mean:
For Venkatesa who is fed up with Vaikunta and has come to be near the bank of Swami Pushkarini, and is sporting with His consort, May it always be glorious.

Hence, before going to Vaikuntam Q Complex, one must go to Swami Pushkarini, have purification bath or either sprinkle some water. This pushkarini is known as Swami Pushkarini because it is the best of all the pushkarinis. It may be mentioned here that Saraswathi river did severe penance to the Lord with a wish that she should be treated on par with Ganges. Lord fulfilled her wish by blessing her that she could stay in TIRUMALA, and could wipe off the sins of all the devotees who come to TIRUMALA.

It is believed that once in a year, all the rivers including the Ganges come to Swami Pushkarini and cleanse their sins. She would be purified once in a year during Brahmotsavam when Lord along with Ubhaya Naachiyars would assemble on Thirthavari day and Chakra Snanam would take place.

Apart from Brahmotsavam, Teppotsavam (Boat Festival of the Lord takes place here for 3 days in a year,)
It has been mentioned that in Puranas that trekking the Hills, having bath in Swami Pushkarini and getting Lord Venkatesa’s prasadam all during a trip is very difficult(“ dhurlabham”). Only the blessed will get all the three opportunities in one yatra. Unlike other pushkarinis in various divya desams and despite the heavy crowd, this pushkarini is very well maintained by T.T.D.

There are separate bathing ghats for men and women. As the waters are very holy, soaps must be avoided. After having a bath in Swami Pushkarini, devotees come to Hanuman sannidhi which is enroute. From there, we have to proceed to Sri Varahaswamy temple. It is a rule laid out by Venkatesa Himself, that Sri Varhaswamy should be worshipped first before having His darsanam.

Significance of The Pushkarini

“Long time ago, Chandra (the Moon) donated gold ornaments at the banks of Swami Pushkarini and attained eternal beauty in return. Lord Kamadeva or Manmadha (the God of Love) gave his daughter away in marriage at the same banks of Swami Pushkarini and obtained a very desirable appearance and beauty that enchants everyone who sees him. Similarly, Kubera (the god of wealth) got his riches by donating gold here. Lord Indra donated sixteen different items at the banks, as a result of which he was able to conquer the most formidable demons. A Brahmin named Kavyavitta obtained Bramha Gnyanam (knowledge of the almighty God) and became known as a renowned scholar. Whoever donates any item at the banks of Swami Pushkarini will obtain higher abode after death”.

Story behind Akasaganga Gods service, Location, Images, Route info

Akasaganga Gods service Sthalapurana

As per Legends, One of the items of service to which Tirumalai Nambi devoted himself was the carrying of water from the Papanasanam, a few miles away, for the daily ablution of the God. He used to carry the water-pot on the head reciting the Periya Tirumoli of Tirumangai Alvar on the way. One day he noticed suddenly that the weight on the head was diminishing gradually, and discovered when he looked at it that the pot was empty. Turning back he discovered a young hunter was drinking off the water by deftly making a small hole in the earthen pot by means of an arrow. To the Nambi’s angry question whether it was proper that he should do what he did, as the water was intended for (God’s service, the hunter answered with a provoking nonchalance ” 0, Grandfather, do not be distressed about the water. Here a little way down is a holy pool of water, from which you can carry the water for the temple service”. So saying he went a little way ahead and pointed to the Akasaganga, and said “This is the holy Ganges water itself, and you might bring this daily for our service “. So saying the hunter disappeared. Wondering at the exhibition of God’s grace to his devotees, he became even more” devoted than before, and was thereafter carrying water from the Akasaganga instead of the more distant Papanasanam.
