Ayush Homam for a newborn in Thirukadaiyur
Ayush Homam is dedicated to the life god to extend our lifespan—Ayush, i.e., life. The sage Bodhayana in the Bodhayana sutras defines homam. The Bodhayana states that if a child is continuously sick, this homam could be done once a month until the child reaches good health. Generally speaking, however, this tradition is carried out just within the first year of birth—that is, on the day of childbirth’s Nakshatra. The day the child turns one year old marks this homam. Should one find oneself unable on this day, it can be completed the next month. You can even perform it once a month. The negative effects from the day of the fortnight (Thithi), day of the week (Vara), and the constellation (nakshatra-star) are removed by doing the Ayush Homam. It bestows upon you excellent health, wealth, and an extended lifespan. Observations indicate that the execution of this homam heals several common diseases that mainstream medications cannot diagnose.
This homam is performed after the 60th, 80th, and 100th years. Along with the Ayush Homam, Srivaishnavites also perform Sri Sooktha, Purusha Sooktha, and Sudarsana Homam. Beginning with Vinayagar and Navagraha pooja, Shaivites performed them using Ganapathi homam and Navagraha homam. But for both, in the end, Jayathi Homam will be performed, followed by Ayush Homam and Purnahuthi. For all the sects of Brahmins, the Jayathi Homam is conducted at the end of every auspicious homam.
It is said that this location is where Lord Shiva blessed Markandeya. It is also believed that Lord Shiva revived Yama at this holy place. Anyone can perform this puja on your behalf. You can perform this Homam on any day. Anyone can perform this puja regardless of their age. It is advisable to perform this Homam once a year for the best results.
