Preparation for Ganapathi Homam

  • Rather than placing the homa kund directly on the floor, lay down a wood plank or similar object, cover it with aluminum foil, and then set four bricks of the same height on top of it. Then, place the homa kund on top of the bricks. Because of this, the floor stays cool and there is some air and a hardwood plank underneath the homa kund.
  • Lay some aluminum foil around the plank that contains the homa kund on the floor for easy cleanup. It is easy to clean up if ghee or anything else gets spilled there.
  • To make the interior of the Homa Kund easier to clean, you can optionally wrap it with aluminum foil.
  • Prepare some Prasadam for offering to the gods. You can also use dates, raisins, rock sugar sweets, fruits, or jaggery.
  • Cook a small amount of white rice. If this isn’t feasible, cut an apple, banana, or other fruit into six slices.
  • Pour water into the cup or tumbler and set the spoon inside.
  • Seventh, take a seat in front of the homa kund. The ideal position for you to be facing is east, meaning that the homa kund should be east of you. Place a little plate or wooden board to the east of the homa kund, top it with a mound of rice grains, and then set the idol—or a metal or clay object, such as a coin—atop it. You can decorate to your taste and ability. Having an idol is up to you. Mahaganapathi is directly worshippable in flames.
  • Using kumkum (vermilion) powder, draw two parallel red lines from the center of the homam kund in the direction of your seat. They have to connect Homa Kundam to your seat by traveling east–west. Pour the melted ghee into the bowl and set it on those lines.
  • Cut the dry coconuts into little bits. One-inch-by-one-inch pieces are helpful.
  • Important: Avoid eating anything for at least an hour before the homam, or three to four hours beforehand.
  • Take a bath and evacuate your bowels before homa. For optimum results, the stomach should be empty during a homam.
