Our Sanskriti & Gyan Temples Pooja, Darshan, and Timings Gau Daan in Rameswaram is performed daily. The puja duration is 1 to 2 hours. Anyone can perform this ritual regardless of their age. It is advisable to perform Gau Daan once in a lifetime. This ritual is performed outside the Rameswaram Temple. One can perform this ritual on behalf of the dead person. There is a myth that one should perform this puja after death. It is not true, as it can be performed when you are alive. Many believe that this ritual should be performed when they are old. The fact is, you can do it any time in your life.
We offer online puja services for those who are unable to attend. The puja will be livestreamed through a video call. There are two types of Gau Daan in Rameswaram. One is donating a silver cow idol, and others prefer Pretyeksha Gau Daan. A Gau Daan will be complete when a cow and calf are donated. The cow should be in acceptable condition. Puja Dress Code
- Gents: dhoti (white) and upper cloth.
- Ladies: saree.
- Regardless of age, we kindly request that all devotees refrain from dressing in jeans and T-shirts.
Instructions to be followed
- Women can participate in this puja after the fifth day of their menstrual cycle.
- One should stop consuming non-veg and alcohol for another 11 days after the puja.
- Three days before the puja, one should abstain from alcohol and non-vegetarian foods.
Gau Daan Procedure in Rameswaram
In Sanatan Dharma, “Gau” means “cow,” and “Daan” means “donation” or “giving without expectation.” Hindu scriptures worship the cow (Kamadhenu) as the mother (Gau Mata), which has 33 Koti (types) of spiritual forces and deities. Gau Daan is regarded as the Atyutham Daan. It is done to invoke spiritual well-being for one’s family, to thank them, and to ask for forgiveness for past bad karma. Gau Daan should be performed independently. This Daan will not be valid if a couple performs this puja. Each person should perform this Daan separately. This Daan can be performed for natural and unnatural death. One should take a head bath before the puja. It is advisable to fast while performing this ritual. We don’t advise fasting for the elderly, patients, and children.
There is a myth that one who donates a cow will die early. Another myth is that this ritual should be performed when a person is about to die. You can perform this ritual when you are healthy in mind and body. This ritual is performed outside the Rameswaram Temple. Even relatives or friends can perform this ritual on behalf of the deceased.

Gau Daan Benefits
- The Garuda Purana states that for one who has performed gau daan during his/her life, the soul can easily cross the celestial Vaitarani River after death.
