Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary Timings, Opening and Closing Hours

Best Time: Oct to Mar months. Sanctuary opens from sunrise to sunset.

During these months, birds from Siberia, Australia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka reach this place for nesting and breeding. This sanctuary spreads over an area of 30 ha and is located in Kancheepuram district. This sanctuary is inhabited with Cormorants, Egrets, Grey Heron, Open-billed stork, Darter, Spoonbill, White Ibis, Night Herons, Grebes, Grey Pelican, Garganey Teals, Shovellers, Pintails, Stilts, Sandpipers, are Coots and Moorhen. It is estimated that around 75,000 birds reside here each year after winter monsoons.

British government developed this sanctuary in 1798. In the year 1962, this area was given with Reserved forest status. This area was declared as the wildlife sanctuary in the year 1972.

Viewpoint is available in the sanctuary for the bird watchers.
