Tirumala Temple History
Vishnu once desired to move out of Vaikuntha. He requested that Narada choose a location on Earth that would be perfect for leisure. Narada proposed the area that eventually became the location of Seshachala. Vayu and Sesha then got into a heated argument over who was stronger than whom. Sesha challenged Vayu to move a portion of Meru after wrapping his lengthy body around it. Vayu attempted, but was unable, to shake the hillock. When Sesha finally opened his lips to breathe, Vayu took advantage of the opportunity to enter his body and expel some of the hills. Once the hill had gone far enough, Meru intervened and asked Vayu to leave it there, which both of them agreed with. Because of his loss, Sesha performed penance for Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu blessed Sesha with a boon. Sesha, taking the form of a hill, asked the Lord to remain on his head and asked for the hill to be called Seshachala. After considering Narada’s earlier proposal, Vishnu decided to reside in Seshachala. The Brahma Purana contains the narrative.
