Tirumala Brahmotsavam: History and Mythology

Despite the fact that other utsavas are performed for the Lord throughout the course of the year, the Brahmotsavas, which are held for nine days each year, are the ones that attain the highest level of prominence in the history of Tirumala.

It was on the day of the Shravana star in Kanya Masam that Sri Venkateshwara made his appearance to defend humanity during the Kali Yuga. This was done in order to give credibility to the proverb “Kalou Venkata Nayakah.” Brahma and other gods and goddesses were the driving forces behind this manifestation. Brahma Himself carried out utsavas for nine days, culminating on the day the Lord manifested himself as a human. Considering that Brahma Himself was the one who performed these utsavas for Sri Venkateshwara, who is a direct manifestation of Para Brahma, these utsavas have gained recognition as Brahmotsavas.

In the course of time that followed, a number of queens worked together to organize Brahmotsavas for Tirumalesha. During the year 614 AD, the Pallava queen Samavai is supposed to have donated the idol of Bhoga Srinivasa Murthy to Tirumala and prescribed for His procession in front of the Brahmotsavas in Kanya Masa.

Brahmotsavas were held almost every month until the year 1583. For instance, in the name of the Telugu Pallava king Vijaya Ganda Gopala Deva in the Chaitra masa in 1254 AD, in the name of “Adi Tirunallu” by Tribhuvana Chakravarthi Tiruvenkatanatha Yadava Rayalu in the Ashadha masa of 1328 AD, in the name of Veera Prathapa Rayalu in the Ashvayuja masa of 1429 AD, in the name of “Masi Tirunallu” by Harihara Rayalu in 1446 AD, and in the name of “Achyutha Raya Brahmotsavas” by Achyutha Raya in 1530 AD. All of these Brahmotsavas were held until the year 1583.

Despite the fact that the utsavas started by those kings and kingdoms eventually came to an end, the utsavas started by Brahma continued up until this very moment for a duration of nine days.
There will be ankuraarpana (starting) and mrutsangrahanam (gathering of dirt) the day before in the evening. The Lord’s Commander, Vishwaksena, will be in charge of making these arrangements. It so happens that the day after that is the day of Dhvajaarohana for you. During this particular day, the flag of Garuda is flown atop the golden dhvaja sthambham, extending an invitation to the inhabitants of all the worlds to attend the utsavas. On that particular evening, there will be Pedda Shesha Vahana Seva performed for the Lord. This day is dedicated to the presentation of silk garments on behalf of the government of Andhra Pradesh.

During the following day, which is the second day, there will be Chinna Shesha Vahanam and Hansa Vahanam both in the morning and evening. On the third day, Simha Vahanam and Mutyapu Pandiri will perform. On the fourth day, Kalpa Vriksha Vahanam and Sarva Bhupala Vahanam will be performed. On the fifth day, Mohini Avataram will be performed in an ivory palanquin in the morning, and Garudotsavam will be performed in the evening. It was the garland that Goda wore. Tirumala hosts the arrival of Devi from Sri Villi Puttur as well as new umbrellas from Chennai. Malayappa is decorated with everything.

The golden Garuda makes its way through the procession of these. Millions of people are present to view the sight. It is expected that Hanumad Vahanam and Gaja Vahanam will be performed on the sixth day, Suryaprabha Vahanam and Chandraprabha Vahanam will be performed on the seventh day, Rathotsavam and Ashva Vahanam will be performed on the eighth day, and Chakra Snanam will be performed on the ninth day. It is scheduled to take place on the same night as Dhvajaavarohanam. Within a year, there will be two Brahmotsavas for Tirumalesha, one in Kanya masa, and another in Sharannavaraatris. Both of these brahmotsavas will be held using adhika masa.
