Rameshwaram Dampathi Snanam, Timings, Entry fees
Numerous myths exist regarding the beginnings of the Ramanathaswamy Temple. According to one of these, Rama, the main figure of the Ramayana, and an avatar of Vishnu installed a lingam—an abstract depiction of Shiva—out of sand on the spot where the temple now stands. According to legend, Rama stopped by the coast to grab a drink while en route to battle Ravana on the island stronghold of Lanka. While he was doing this, Rama heard a voice from heaven informing him that he had not worshipped the appropriate deity before drinking the water. After determining that the voice belonged to Shiva, Rama created a sand lingam and bowed to it. To defeat Ravana, the hero also requested Shiva’s blessing, which was granted. In the end, Rama asked Shiva to live there forever so that humanity could profit from it. Shiva accepted this as well and changed into the lingam that is kept in the temple.
