Papanasanam Temple History

As per the Legend, Indra with his Weapon cut off Viswaruban three heads as he is secretly offering Havissu to Asuras. Indra incurred Brahmahathi Dosha. To get rid of the Sin of Killing Brahmin Guru, he travelled to many places. On the advice of Guru Brihaspati, Indra reached this place and Installed the Idol. He got relieved from the Sin on worshipping the Lord Siva.

Lord Siva instructed Sage Agastya to reach Pothigai Hills in the South to balance the Earth. All Devas reached the Himalayas to attend Lord Siva and Parvathi Wedding which created an imbalance on the Earth. Sage Agastya reached this place and worshipped the deity. Lord Siva and Goddess Paravati appeared before Sage Agastya his wife Lopamudra in the wedding dress. Hence the deity called by Agasthyar.

This is the first temple among the Nava Kailasam temples around Tirunelveli.
