Nanjangud Temple History
As per the folklore, Haala Hala emerged out of Milk Ocean while churning. The power of poison started killing the living creatures and damaging the universe. Lord Siva consumed the poison and saved the creation. Hence the deity is called by Nanjundeshwara, where Nanjunda means one who consumed Haala Hala. This temple is located on the banks of the River Kapila.
Parasurama, an Avatar of Lord Vishnu worshipped Lord Siva to get rid of the sin of Killing her mother Renuka Devi. Gautham Rishi worshipped the deity.
Chola Kings made huge contributions during the 11th and 12th century followed by Hoysala rulers and Vijayanagara Kings. Mysore rulers made huge contributions and reached high attention during the reign of Krishna Raja Wodeyar.
Nanjangud Temple Festivals / Important dates
- Mondays, New moon days, Full moon days are most important at this temple.
- Girija Kalyanam will be held in the month of Mithuna (Jul). Grand celebration of Lord Siva and Goddess Parvati marriage.
- Rathotsavam will be performed during Chikka Jatara, 3 chariots will be pulled in the streets which are held in the month of Vrischika ie. Nov.
- Pancha Maharotsava will be held in the month of Apr and this festival will be celebrated for 10 days.
- Maha Sivaratri and Navaratri are the major festivals at this temple.

Opening Hours: 6:00 am – 8:30 pm on festival days, Sundays and Mondays.
