Significance of Maha Mrityunjaya Japa

Rishi Markandeya received the Mrityunjaya Mantra from Lord Shiva. There is a history behind this. For years, Bhrigu Rishi and his wife, Marudmati, prayed to Lord Shiva for a son. They received some crucial knowledge from Lord Shiva as a result of their devotion, including the option to have a bright child who would live a short life or a low-intelligence child who would live a long one. After Rishi Brighu agreed to accept Lord Shiva’s promise of having a kid with a short life span, Lord Shiva granted the blessing that a son named Markandeya would be born to you soon with a life span of just 12 years.

Markandeya Rishi and his spouse decided to keep their son from knowing the truth. Markandeya’s parents were upset when his 12th birthday arrived. Markandeya was unable to understand their pain. At his request, the two retold the entire situation. Then Markandeya started his penance in front of Shiva Ling. The God of Death, Yama, then arrived on Earth to take him on his 12th birthday. Though they prayed to God, his parents were unable to complete the deed.

The youngster, on the other hand, maintained his calmness and wrapped the Shiva ling in his arms, submitting to Lord Shiva’s compassion. Lord Shiva’s lone bodyguard, Shiva Ling, caught the infant when Lord Yama subsequently tried to steal his soul. The boy surprised Shiva, who became furious and punished Yama. Shiva has bestowed on Markandeya the “Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra” to provide him with longevity.
