This reserve stretches over an area of 1601.542 Sq. Km, in which is 895 Sq. Km is for the core and 706.542 is for the buffer zone.  It is one of the three Tiger Reserves in TamilNadu and 17th in India. This reserve is the source for 14 rivers. 11 dams were built in and around the reserve.

The Kalakad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve was established in 1988. This reserve was created by combining 251 km of Kalakad Wildlife Sanctuary and 567 km of Mundanthurai Wildlife Sanctuary, which were created in 1962. A 400 Sq. Km core area of this reserve is proposed for the national park.

49 Pisces, 45 Amphibians, 88 Reptiles, 337 Aves and 79 mammals were recorded in this reserve.

This reserve is inhabited with Tigers, Jackals, Elephants, Nilgiri Tahr, Sambar, Gaur, Wildboar, Mouse deer, sloth bear, Spotted deer, Leopard etc.

Best Time to  Visit: Oct-Mar.
