Ettumanoor Shiva Temple History

As per the Legend, Khara, an asura from Ramayana did penance for Lord Siva. Impressed Lord blessed him with Three Siva Lingas and granted his wish. While on his way towards South in Sky, Lingas started weighing more. He came to the Eart to relax for a while. He installed Lingas at three different places, one such place is Ettumanoor.

Khara got the boon from Lord Siva that Lord Siva should always be with him. Khara an expert in assuming different forms. One day he assumed deer form, Siva who followed him through hills got completely exhausted and finally unable to follow the deer carried it in his hands. The place where Lord Siva carried deer became Ettiya (carried) – Maan (deer) Ooru (place) which came to know as Ettumanoor.

Khara installed Maha Vishnu Idol on the North-West corner of the temple facing East. This is known as Balagopala temple – Keezhtrikoil.

As per the folklore, Vyasa Rishi came to the temple for Darshan. He got down into a nearby tank but slipped and fell. Onlookers, burst into laughter. The angered sage cursed the place that it will be inhabited by wild animals for 1000 years. Rishi Vilwamangalathu Swamiyar reached this place after 1000 years and worshipped Lord Siva. Sage offered Pooja with the plantains and molasses he had brought for his food. Even today, the same food is offered as the first offering to the deity.

It is said that Pandyan king Chanda Bhaskara built this temple.
