Abhishekam will be performed for the Sani Bhagawan with Milk, Curd, Oil, Rosewater, Tender Coconut water, Fruit Juice etc.

At 5:00 am, priests will be chanting Devaram Isai. The devotees are allowed to have Darshan of Sani Bhagawan with his Vahanam Cow.

The devotees used to take bath in Nala theertham (temple tank) before entering the shrine.

The crowd will be high on this special day. The long waiting queue to enter the shrine. Thousands of devotees participate in the Holy pooja. Abhishekam and Archana performed for the whole day. It is advised to wear black clothes during the Pooja. This Pooja is performed for the group of devotees.

Brahma Theertham

To the East of the Temple opposite to the main Gopuram, there is a tank created by Lord Brahma. Hence the name Brahma Theertham. It is believed that taking a holy dip in this Theertham will achieve Brahma Loka afterlife

Saraswathi Theertham

Theertham is located to the South of the temple. Theertham is facing Sub-Shrine housing the Goddess. This Theertham was created by the Goddess Saraswathi. Holy dip in this Theertham for 45 consecutive days followed by the prayer to the deities is believed to bless even the dump with eloquence and effusive wisdom

Nala Theertham

This temple is located to the Northwest of the temple. This temple tank was created by the popular king Nala to get rid of his miseries. It is said to possess miraculous powers. It is believed that a holy dip in this tank followed by the worship of the deities would totally rid them of all their miseries including the ill effects caused by Saneeswarar.

Nalakoopam (Well)

This well is located on the bank of Nala Theertham. It is said that this well was dug out by the King Nala. Water from this well is used for the temple rituals.

Sthala Vriksha

For Thirunallar Temple, Kusa (Darba) grass is the sacred tree. The main deity here called by Darbaraneswara who self-manifested in the Darba forest. The scar of Darba can be seen on the main deity in the sanctum sanctorum. This is the only temple with Kusa as the Sthala Vriksha.

Ambagarathur Kali Amman Temple

Temple is 8 km from Thirunallar and is in the West. As per the Legend, Goddess Kali self-manifested here after slaying the demon Ambaran. She calmed down and took a graceful form. The images on the South and North Gopuram narrate the heroic deeds of Bhadrakali, tearing the chest of the demon Ambaran.

Nalanarayana Perumal

After offering prayers to Lord Darbaranyeswara, Nala built the temple for Lord Vishnu. Hence the temple called by Nala Narayana Temple.  Temple is located on the main road itself, which is on the way to Nala Theertham.

There is a Siva temple worshipped by a Saivite Saint Llayankudi Maranar. This temple is under the maintenance of Archaeological department.

Thirumalairayanpattinam

Ayiram Kali Temple was built by Thirumalairayan. Famous Tamil poet Kalamegam has sung on this deity. This deity appeared in the dreams of the King who recovered the Idol from the sea.

Karaikkovilpaththu

Temple is 1.5 km from Karaikal. It is also called Thiruthelicheri. This place was worshipped by the Goddess. The Holy tank is located in the temple premises. The temple faces West and in the Meena month, Sun’s rays fall on the Lingam for Ten days from 13th of the month.

Thiruvettakudi

This village is 7 km from Karaikal. Lord Siva disguised as a hunter and appeared before Arjuna while he was performing penance.

Dharmapuram

There is a temple dedicated to Lord Siva. The Lord of death, Yama with His consort Abhayambika , performed penance here for Lord Siva to get rid of the sin of throwing rope on Lord along with Markandeya at Thirukadaiyur. The main deity is called by Dharmapureeswarar. It is believed that Lord Rama and Brahma offered prayers for this deity.

Nithyakalyana Perumal Temple

This temple is located right next to Karaikal Ammaiyar’s temple. This temple was built in 11th Century AD. Lord Ranganatha is seen here reclining in Veerasayana without his consorts.

Kailasanatha Temple

This ancient temple is located right opposite to Karaikal Ammaiyar Temple.

Shani Pooja procedure and guidelines

1. Daily Pooja will be performed for Lord Darbaraneyswara and Goddess Praneswari for 6 times. For Maragatha Lingam, it is five time and four times for Shani Bhagawan.
2. Darshan of Maragatha Linga can be had only during the routine Pooja time
3. Right offering to this temple is done by taking bath in Nala Theertham, Lighting Gingelly oil lamps, performing Abhishekam, Sahasra Namarchana and Homam to Sani Bhagawan, taking the Sani Murthy on the golden Crow Vahanam, feeding crows etc.
4. Shani in this temple is in Anugraha pose offering refuge (Abhayam). There is no objection in Sani Prasadam being taken home.
5. Gingelly lamps to be purchased inside the temple only. Outside lamps are not allowed
6. No need to leave or throw clothes after the Pooja. Instead, they can take their clothes back home after the head bath.
7. No need to hire any guides at the temple as procedures are self-explanatory and information centre is available for assistance.
8. The crowd will be little on Sani Peyarachi and other important festival dates.

6. One can donate gingerly oil, black  color blankets to the poor to reduce the ill effects.

10. If Amavasya falls on a Saturday, then it is Shani Amavasya and is an auspicious day for the Shani God Pooja. Visit any temple nearby and offer prayers.
11. Praying Shani God on Shani Trayodasi or Shani Peyarchi day yields good results.

Thirunallar Temple Legends

As per the Legend, Nala was the ruler of Nishada, he established a vast dynasty and the kingdom prospered under his rule. Nala wants marry Damayanthi, daughter of the King Bhima, ruler of Vidharbha. Nala sent his message to Damayanthi thru swan and they were in love. Meanwhile King Bhima arranged Swayamvaram for her daughter, Damayanthi married Nala during this ceremony.  Kali was jealous on Nala as he could not marry Damayanthi and decided to make their life hell.

Shani got the opportunity, when Nala did not wash his feet properly while preparing for his prayers, from then on Shani started acting on Nala.

Kali entered the mind of Nala’s brother, Pushkara and exhorted him to challenge Nala to the dice game. In the dice game, Nala lost his kingdom and left to forest with his wife. Nala left his wife by leaving a note while she is sleeping. With the help of Swaguhu, Damayanthi reached her father’s place and started living there with her kids. Nala became ugly with the bite from Karkotaka serpent. He then leading life as a cook and charioteer for the King Rituparna.

After 12 years of Shani Period, Nala got back his original form by wearing the magical garment and won the lost kingdom in the dice game and started living with his family.

Though he is out of Shani period, Nala was disturbed so he started spiritual expedition with his family. During their journey, they met Sage Bardwaja at Virudhachalam. Sage advised him to visit Thirunallar once for peace and happy living.

Nala visited Thirunallar with his family and had bath in Brahma Theertham and entered Sanctum Sanctorum of the templ and got relieved completely from Shani effect.

It is said that this is the place, where Lord Siva stopped Saneeswarar from concurring Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma created Brahma theertham while offering prayers to Lord Siva here.
