It dates back to Dwapara Yug, King Surya Ketu who used to rule Shivapuri was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. He used to worship Lord Badrinath regularly. As the King getting old so he was not able to travel long. He then prayed to Lord Vishnu for his inability. Pleased Lord Vishnu answered in his dream that he will appear in his area. King requested to Vishwa Karma to sculpture the Idol of Lord Vishnu. It is said that Bhima, Pandava’s brother installed the Idol. Lord appeared in his dreams and expressed his angere that Idol is not of his and cursed King and his generations to stay away from this temple.

At the end of Dwapara Yuga when Earth filled with water, Lord Krishna sent his Sudarshan Chakra and cut the Chobhar hill so that Kathmanadu will not drown. Mud covered the Idol and went under the Earth. The place where the Idol resides is called Khaalo.

One day, A farmer by Nilkantha started farming his land with the Plough. The plough struck the Idol and blood started oozing out of the Earth. The villagers gathered and unearthed the Idol. As the father was old, he was called by Budha Nilkantha. Hence the name of the Idol.

1. The body will be washed in Bagmati River.
2. It will be wrapped in orange cloth.
3. Orange flowers will be used during this process.
