Santhana Venugopala Swamy temple Hemmaragala

As per the Legend, Lord Krishna appeared in the dreams of the Kinga Gangarasaru and revealed his whereabouts. The King while on his way back after the victory in the war, the chariot wheel got stuck at one place. It stuck at the same place as said by Lord Krishna. King Gangarasa unearthed and took the Idol to the Sage Koundinya Ashram. Sage Koundinya installed the Idol and offered prayers. Later this temple was renovated by the Hoysala King Veeraballava. King Veeraballava donated lands to meet temple needs in the year 1298 AD.

The deity here is called by various names, such as Bala Gopala, Hucchu Gopala, Si Santana Venugopal etc.

The Garbha Griha reflects Hoysala architecture. The outer structure reflects Vijayanagar times or later. One must watch Udbhava Narasimha carved on a pillar.

Very soon the Queen conceived and blessed with a baby girl. Disappointed King thought of ending his life. To their utter shock, the baby girl turned to baby boy. Hence, the deity called by Hucchu (Mad) Gopala.

This historical palace also called Amba Palace. Wodeyars who ruled the region from 1399 AD to 1950 AD built this place in 14th century AD. In the year 1610 AD, Wodeyars shifted the capital from Mysore to Srirangapatnam, however, Mysore Palace remained the official residence. A Lightning struck the palace and damaged partially in 1638 AD. The then King Raja Wodeyar II did the repair work.

In 1700 AD Century, When Tippu Sultan got into power, demolished the palace and used the material to construct a fort at Nazarabad. When Tippu Sultan lost the battle to the Britishers in 1799 AD, Britishers destroyed the Tippu’s palace at Nazarabad and used the fort material to built the palace at Mysore in 1803 AD and reinitiated Krishnaraja Wodeyar III as the ruler of Mysore. In 1897, the major portion of the palace got burnt during a wedding ceremony of the Princess Jayalakshmanni. The present form of the Palace was built in 1912 AD by the British architect Henry Irwin and it cost 4.5 Million Rupees during that time. The fort will be lighted with 97000 electric bulbs daily.

Talakadu Temple to be the scene of a constant battle for supremacy between Nature represented by Soil, and Man symbolised his creations, the temples.

Talakadu Temple Legends

As per the Legends, Alamelamma wife of Tirumalaraya of the Vijayanagara dynasty, fled to Malingi on the opposite bank of the river Cauvery from Talakad, after the defeat of the Vijayanagara by the first Wodeyar king at Srirangapatnam. As a religious woman, she used to send jewels to the Temples at Talakad frequently, to decorate the idols of goddesses. Knowing this, Raja Wodeyar tried to arrogate these jewels which she was carrying with her, she cursed him saying “Talakadu Marulagi” which means ‘Let Talakadu be covered by soil’. She then drowned herself in the river.

There is another interesting story, from which the Panchalinga festival originates, which is mentioned in the Puranas. The name Talakadu is said to be derived from two brothers Tala and Kada, who were hunters. While on their way to the jungle, they saw a strange thing. Some elephants were worshipping at a tree near the river, offering lotuses. Curious, they struck the base of the tree with an axe to find the blood flowing. It is believed that the Lingam found here was formed when the Lord Siva himself had visited the place.

The hunters were shocked till a divine voice told them to bind the ‘wound’ caused by the axe with juice from the fruit and leaves of the tree. When hunters did that, the blood turned into milk. The voice then told them to drink the milk. They did so and went to heaven. So did the wild elephants, who were none other than the Sage Somadatta of Kasi and his followers. They were killed by wild elephants in the Vindhya mountains while on their way to Talakad (Called Siddharanya Kshetra in those days) at the instance of Lord Siva to gain liberation. In their last mortal breath in their previous birth, they had thought of wild elephants and so, it is believed, were born as elephants.

The five PanchaLingam shrines are called Vaidyeswara, Arkeswara, Vasukiswara, Saikateswara and Mallikarjuna.

Talakadu Temple History

This temple dates back to Chola times. The structures resemble Hoysala and Vijayanagara styles of architecture too. The western Ganga rulers (350 A.D – 1050 AD) were in power at Talakad for nearly 500 years. It came into hands of Chola Kings. During the final years of the 10th Century and was with them till 1116 A.D, when the Hoysalas captured the region. In the mid-14th Century A.D, the Vijayanagara kings took the control, after whom it came into Wodeyars ruling.

Great Sculptor Jakanacharya built the temple with perfection. On seeing this deva decided to carry this flawless temple to Indra Lok. When the temple was rising into the air the sculptor mutilated some images on the walls and the structure fell back on terra firma with little change in the positioning which resulted in flagstaff misalignment with the entrance.
