Hartalika Teej’s story states that Goddess Parvati’s friend took her into a dense forest so her father could not force her to marry Lord Vishnu against her will.

Goddess Parvati’s father believed his daughter had been abducted when she disappeared so quickly. Therefore, Hartalika or Haritalika Day, is observed on this day.

According to tradition, Goddess Parvati performed tapasya in the forest to please Lord Shiva. Goddess Parvati was granted the blessing that her wish to wed Lord Shiva will come true because of her strong willpower.
