Local people know this park by the name Ghana. It is a mosaic of grasslands, Woodlands, woodland swamps, and wetlands. This park is inhabited by 375 avian species including 140 species of waterfowl, 372 species of plants, 34 species of mammals, 57 species of fish, 14 species of snakes, 5 species of lizards, 3 species of geckos, 7 species of turtles, 8 species of amphibians, 71 species of butterflies and other lower life forms.

This sanctuary is popularly known as Birds Paradise. 375 bird species have been recorded in the park. Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary is an intermediate station for migratory waterfowl arriving in Indian subcontinent along the central Asian flyway before dispersing to various regions. This park hosts 15 species of birds in huge numbers. This park used to be the only wintering site in India for the central population of the rare and endangered Siberian Cranes till 2002. Common migratory ducks in the park are Pintail, Common Teal, Shoveller, Gadwall, Greylag and Bar-headed Geese, Wigeon and Common Pochard, Marbled, and Baikal Teals are threatened species and are rarely sighted. Falcated Teal, Baer’s Pochard, Common Shelduck, Scaup Duck and White fronted Goose are also rarely sighted. 42 species of raptors and 9 species of owls are found in the park.

 

This bird Sanctuary opens on all day for the visitors. Best Time to Visit: Oct – Feb months.
