Brahma Hatya Dosha Nivarana in Srisailam is performed daily. The puja lasts for about 3 hours. Two priests will perform this ritual. Killing a Brahmin is considered a terrible sin and is believed to cause immense suffering. The perpetrator of this sin will suffer dire repercussions, affecting both the current birth and future ones. Here ‘Hatya’ means murder, and ‘Brahma’ is generally taken to mean the revered Brahmins. Therefore, it is commonly believed that the Dosha, i.e., the disease, is caused by the murder of a Brahman. Yet some scriptures declare that Brahmahatya comes from any homicide or even from the commission of many other crimes.

The following seven crimes are the deadly sin of Brahmahatya:

  • Killing a human being or causing physical or mental harm or pain
  • Looking for another person’s wife or property
  • and willfully destroying or poisoning another person’s property
  • Neglecting parents and disregarding ancestral worship
  • Injuring noble men who are performing selfless service
  • Preventing timely assistance from reaching those in dire need
  • Disrespecting teachers, elders, and Vedic scholars is also a cause of this deadly sin.

It is believed that the deadly sin is caused by the transgressions of the person or his ancestors.

  • Women can participate in this puja after the fifth day of their menstrual cycle.
  • If there is any death in the family, one should perform the puja after 3 months.
  • One should stop consuming non-veg and alcohol for another 11 days after the puja.
  • Three days before the puja, one should abstain from alcohol and non-vegetarian foods.
