After a person dies and the puja is conducted on the 12th or 13th day, the soul travels southward for 348 days to the residence of Lord Yamaraja. To reach Yamaloka, the soul must travel through sixteen towns. The soul reaches the eighth town about the sixth month of the deceased’s prayer. He must cross the dangerous Vaitarani River after leaving the eighth town to reach the ninth town. He must swim over it if he did not offer the Gau Daan, but if he did, he goes across on a boat. Giving a cow as a present makes crossing the Vaitarani River much easier, and it also relieves those mourning along the way. Sastras highly recommend this offering.

Instructions to be followed
- Women can participate in this puja after the fifth day of their menstrual cycle.
- If there is any death in the family, one should perform the puja after 3 months.
- One should stop consuming non-veg and alcohol for another 11 days after the puja.
- Three days before the puja, one should abstain from alcohol and non-vegetarian foods.
Gau Daan Procedure in Hyderabad
