This homam is performed seeking blessings from Ayurdevatha, the god of life and health. Saint Bodhanya mentioned the Ayushya Homam within the Bodhanya Sutras. It is advisable to perform this homa if the child has been sick for a long time.

Ayush Suktham will be chanted during this pooja. Majorly, this pooja will be performed on the 1st year’s birthday (as per Janma nakshatra), entering into the 60th, 70th, 80th, or 100th year. This homam can also be performed by any person who is not well.

How do Shaivites and Vaishnavites perform Ayush Homam?
Vaishnavites perform Sri Sooktha, Purusha Suktha, Sudarsana Homam, and Ayush Homam. Shaivites start with Ganapathi Prarthana, Navagraha Pooja, then Ganapathi Homam, Mruthyunjaya Homam, and Navagraha Homam. After completing Ayush Homam and Poorna Ahuthi, Jayathi Homam will be performed at the end.
Why is Ayusha Homam performed for a baby boy or a baby girl?
When the child is born, there are chances that the child can carry previous Janma memories. This Homam helps in removing such karma and makes him/her fit to live in the present Janma. Cooked rice, cow’s ghee, and Samithu will be offered to the Agni. Ayush Sooktham will be recited a minimum of three times while making the offering.
Sage Bodhayana stated that whenever a child falls ill continuously, performing this Homam every month will yield better results. In general, Ayusha Homam will be performed on the 1st year birthday calculated as per the Janma Nakshatra. If the homam cannot be performed on the 1st year birthday, it can be performed in the next month. After the homam, the child will be fed prasadam mixed with sugar. Later, the child’s head will be tonsured, and ear piercings will be performed. And it marks the Homam’s completion.

- The performer will change the Sacred thread (Yagyopavitam)
- Suddhi Punyahavachanam
- Ganapathi Sthapana
- Sankalpam and Aarti
- Ayurdevatha, Kula Devatha, Ishta Devatha and Nakshatra Devatha Aavaahanam into the Kumbam
- Chanting Ayush Sooktham for minimum 3 times
- Agni Avaahanam
- Pradhana Ayush Homam
