The moment one mentions “TIRUPATI” one is reminded of tonsuring and laddus. KalyanaKatta in Tirumala is a multi-storeyed building situated opposite to Free Meals building where thousands of devotees offer their hairs to Lord Sri Venkateswara. At a time, Hundreds of devotees can tonsure at KalyanaKatta Tirumala and tonsuring is done at free of cost. There is an interesting incident connected with this. Hair is said to be the ‘crowning glory” as one’s beauty gets enhanced due to the hair. By shaving off one’s head, one loses his ego and with a submissive mind, one would be able to have darsana. Hence, due to the multifold benefits, thousands of devotees invariably shave off their head.

Female Barbers are available only in Main KalyanaKatta, which operates from 2 am – 12 am.

Ear Piercing at KalyanaKatta Tirumala

It may be observed in many South Indian houses whose “KULADEIVAM” is Lord Venkatachalapathy, they pray to offer the hairs of the newborns to Lord Srinivasa and pierce ears of their newborns in this holy kshetra at KalyanaKatta Tirumala. There is a separate hall near Janata Canteen where there are professionals in ear piercing. One can either give some rice, vegetables, fruits, flowers to the person who does this or can give him some money.

The story behind Tonsuring in KalyanaKatta Tirumala

The first devotee who gave her hair to god is Neela Devi. Lord Srinivasa named this hill by her name as Neeladri. When Lord Srinivasa was hit by a Shepard on his head, a small portion of his scalp becomes bald. There is no hair growth over that place and this was noticed by Gandharva princess, Neeladevi. She felt such a handsome face should not have any defect. Immediately she cuts a portion of her hair and implants it on his scalp with her powers. As hair is considered as the beautiful aspect of women, Lord Srinivasa notices her sacrifice and he said all the hair given to him by devotees in Tirumala or Tirupati belongs to Neeladevi. Giving our hair to god is the symbol of leaving our ego. The word “Talanelalu” also comes from her name.

      on reaching Tirupati, please board bus to Tirumala at Tirupati bus station. Which takes 60 mins to reach Tirumala. On getting down at Tirumala, please walk to Rambagicha Guest house near main temple for hair offering

      Dear Sir,
      Please offer hair either at Padmavathi Guesthouse or Rambagicha guesthouse (near main temple). Accommodation may not be possible as crowd will be high.

    We are planning to come to Tirupati on 27-Oct-16 night and go for darshan at Tirumala on 28-Oct-16 with our new born baby (5 months old) along with our elder daughter (7 years old). My wife and elder daughter will go for hair offering (Tonsuring). I came to know that infant darshan (below 1 year) will be allowed in the morning only. We are going to put up in a hotel in Tirupati and we will be there for 3 days till 30-Oct-16. Need clarification for the following.

    1. Is infant darshan available on 28-Oct-16 and 29-Oct-16 (Diwali day)?
    2. Exact timing for infant darshan?
    3. When and where should we go for hair offering so that we can go for darshan after hair offering?
    4. Do we need to buy blades at Tirumala only?
    5. Tentative time to stand in a queue for hair offering? (This will be helpful for us to plan for a darshan)

    My wife has vowed to shave our head ( me, wife and baby) in Tirumala. Is there any head having service offered at our accommodation itself (barber coming to our guesthouse ) ? Or any separate place in tonsuring centre with limited or no access to unrelated people .

      Please get tonsure done at Rambagicha guesthouse near main temple. It will not take more than 20 mins here. After tonsuring, please take head bath at Srivari Pushkarini which is 5 mins walk from this place.

    I wish to offer hair at rambagicha guest house place in tirumala… but the reporting place in 300 Rs ticket is marked as ATC car parking. this is shown in map at down hill tirupathi. this means that after tonsuring at tirumala, i have to come again to tirupathi down hill which may take again one hour?? . please clarify, if i can report at tirumala itself after tonsuring.. thanks..(07/11/2016 special entry darshan 1400 hrs slot )

      Before the darshan you need to go for head tonsure and then plan for drashan and you can get the tonsure at kalayana katta as well as near guest houses too so plan accordingly.
