Ujjain Mahakal History
Temple is located on the banks of River Shipra. As per the Legend, Ujjain was once called by Avanti which as named by Lord Siva after his ardent devotee, Keerthi Veeryarjuna Son Avanti. It is said that Sage Vasishta used the water from this holy river Shipra for Kanyadhan, hence the river got more holiness. This temple is one among the 12 Jyotirlingas across the India.
As per the folklore, The priest Vridhi and his sons used to offer prayers for Siva Linga. There was demon used to live on the mountain Ratnamala which is next to this place. The demon who got the boon from Lord Brahma used to trouble the people.Once the demon attacked the priest and his sons, who used to worship Lord Siva regularly. Lord Siva took the form of Mahakaleshwar and killed the demon and self-manifested on request of the devotees.
As per Siva Purana, this temple was built during Dwapara Yuga. This temple was built by the Nanda rulers. Naga Chandreswar temple at the entrance opens on Naga Panchami day and remains closed on all other days.
Devotees are allowed to perform Jalabhishek for 5 mins inside Garbha Griha.

7:30 pm – 8:00 pm (For the months of Karthik to Phalgun)
