Sringeri Temple which is dedicated to Goddess Saraswati devi was built by Adi Sankaracharya and lived here for 12 years.
Sringeri Temple Legends
There is an interesting story in choosing this place in setting up Mutt here. Adi Sankara saw the rare sight of a hooded King Cobra giving shade to a pregnant frog, to protect frog from the burning sun rays. Sringeri in Sanskrit means ‘mountain shaped like a question mark’.
Sringeri is derived from the Rishyasringa Hill nearby. It is believed that Rishyasringa son of rishi Vibahndaka, lived here for some time with his father. He brought rain to the dry lands of King Romapada. King Dasaratha of Ayodhya is believed to have invited Rishyasringa to direct in the ceremony he performed to beget progeny.
Sringeri Temple History
Sri Adi Sankaracharya erected a simple structure here, in which he installed Sandalwood Idol of the goddess Sarada Devi. Later, Sri Vidyaranya, the 12th pontiff, who renovated the temple and installed the golden idol of Sri Sarada Devi. This structure which was built in the 14th century was renovated by the 33rd Pontiff in 1907 AD. Final ceremony of Kumbabhishekam was performed in 1916 A.D.
Adi Sankaracharya originally installed the Goddess idol over Sri Chakra Yantra which was engraved on a rock. Sri Vidyasankara shrine was built in 1346 A.D which resembles Dravidian and Hoysala styles.
