Vijayawada Durga Temple History
As per the legend, Goddess self-manifested here on Keeladri, where Keeludu a Yaksha did penance for Goddess Durga. Impressed Goddess Durga Devi granted him with a wish that she will reside on Keeludu in Krutya Yuga. Keeludu transformed himself into a hill and stayed near River Krishna. Goddess self-manifested on Keeladri after killing the demon Mahisasura. It is said that Indra (God of Heaven) did penance here for Goddess Durga. Hence the name, Indra Keeladri.
Lord Brahma performed Sataswamedha Yajna on Indrakeeladri for which Lord Siva self-manifested here in Jyotirlinga form. Lord Siva here called by Mallikarjuna Swamy. From the Puranas, it is known that Lord Brahma installed Siva Linga and worshipped with Jasmine flowers. Hence the name Mallikarjuna Swamy.
Arjuna, Pandava’s brother did penance here for Lord Siva seeking Pasupatha Astra. Lord Siva disguised himself as a hunter and fought with Arjuna to test his skill before granting him Pasupatham. This place is also called by Phalguna Theertha. Jagadguru Adi Sankaracharya installed Sri Chakra in this temple.
Kumkum Archana is popularly known in this temple. It has 2500 steps to climb from the ground to the temple. There is a free Bus service and lifts available to go to the temple.
Temple will be heavily crowded during Navaratri days. The nine-day festival will be celebrated in a grand.
