The history of Tiruchanur, also called Alamelu Mangapuram, dates back to 830 AD, which can be found in an inscription in the Tirumala temple. Pilgrims, since time immemorial, follow the age-old custom of visiting this temple before trekking the Tirumala hills for a glimpse of the Lord. As the fete falls in the auspicious month of `Kartheeka’, the temple witnesses heavy flow of devotees from across the State and the bordering areas of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

`Ankurarpanam’, an initiatory ritual, will be performed inside temple by priests.`Laksha Kumkumarchana’ will follow Ankurarpanam, where priests will shower `kumkum’ on the deity continuously, amid chanting of hymns.

The beginning of the fete will be formally signaled by the hoisting of a flag atop the temple flagpost on Day 1. While the flag at Tirumala has an image of `Garuda’, this festival will witness hoisting of the flag which has the image of an elephant, the favourite celestial carrier of the Goddess. Mythologically, the event is meant to extend an invitation to the demi-gods and other celestial beings to the grand gala fete. `Chakra Snanam’ or `Panchami Theertham’ will be performed on the last day, when tens of thousands of devotees converge and take a holy dip in the `pushkarini’ (temple tank).
