Shri Nageshwar Jyotirling Story
The eighth Jyotirlinga, Shri Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, is located in Maharashtra. Legend has it that when the Pandavas were exiled from the kingdom, their cow, Kapila, would go into the lake every day and return with no milk. Gurakhi told Dharmaraj about the cow going inside the lake and coming back. Bhima also conveyed the same to Dharmaraj. Dharmaraj asked Bhima to break the pond and remove the water. The light that came up from the bottom of the pond was like the sun’s light. The light from the earth is so high that people living nearby couldn’t distinguish between day and night. A voice from the sky instructed Dharmaraj to bring 21 sandbags from Rameswaram and Shaligram from the Gandaki River in Nepal. With the help of sand and Shaligram, Dharmaraj installed Shiva Linga.
Aurangzeb destroyed a portion of the highest portion of the Shri Nageshwar Jyotirlinga temple. Rajmata Ahilyabai Holkar, the queen of Indore, has rebuilt Shri Nageshwar Jyotirlinga temple. To achieve the goal of visiting Shri Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, there is only one route to get to the sanctum sanctorum. This location is Shri Nageshwar Jyotirlinga.
Earlier, the snake deity would pay his respects to the linga that was located in the pond; hence, the god chose to call himself Nageshwar.
