Ryali Jagan Mohini Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The presiding deity is known as Jagan Mohini Keshava. The front portion of the Idol is depicting the Lord Vishnu in the male form, and the back portion is of the female form which is Jagan Mohini. The figure is a typical female form with a fine and flowing lock of hair and knit with flowers. There are ornaments on her legs. This temple was built by the King Raja Narendra of Chola Dynasty in 11th century A.D.
Ryali Jagan Mohini Sthalapurana
Lord Vishnu disguised himself as Jagan Mohini (female form) to cheat Asuras while distributing Nectar (Amrutha). Mohini while returning in a chariot after distributing Nectar, the nail of the chariot wheel fell down after reaching the mid-region of Godavari. Mohini turned back and found that Lord Siva was in Mohini Maaya and following the Chariot. Lord Vishnu appeared in his actual form to break the Maaya of Lord Siva, with the female form on his back. Lord self-manifested here with his two forms. Regretted Lord Siva self-manifested here. The place where the nail fell down came to know as Ryali.
Goddess Ganga will be in a Padmasana Posture at the Lord’s holy feet. The water flows continuously from the Holy feet.
Ryali Jagan Mohini Temple History
As per the Legends, the King Vikrama Deva ruler of this region was relaxing under a tree after hunting. In his dreams, he saw a group of devotees praising the Lord with their songs. King got up from sleep and remained awake for some time and went to sleep again. He got the same dream again while asleep. The same day night, Lord Vishnu appeared in the dreams of the Kings and revealed his whereabouts. As advised by the Lord, the King built the wooden chariot and started dragging the Car, after reaching some distance the nail of chariot fallen down. King ordered the staff to recover the Idol below the Earth. Temple was built for this Idol where the king had the dream of Bhajans.
