According to folklore, King Dasaratha performed this Yagna during the Treta Yuga. King Dasaratha was blessed with children: Rama, Lakshmana, Bharatha, and Shatrugna. A couple should perform this powerful Yagna together for optimal results. There is a misconception that performing Putra Kameshti will bless a baby boy. In fact, the Yagna can bless a couple with either a baby boy or a baby girl. One should take a head bath before the puja. It is advisable to fast while performing this puja. One should perform this puja with utmost devotion.
You can perform this puja on any day. Rameswaram Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga Sthalas. As per the legend, Lord Rama installed and worshipped Lord Shiva at this place. It is advisable to perform this puja at this holy place for the best results. The word “Putra” means “a baby boy or a baby girl,” and “Kamesthi” means “wish.” Typically, two to three pandits will be performing this ritual. An astrologer can let you know the auspicious date for this puja. The puja duration is 3 to 4 hours. It is advisable to carry an extra set of clothes, as Avabrutha Snanam will be performed at the end.

- A woman can perform this puja after the fifth day of her menstrual cycle.
- If there is a death in the family, you can perform this puja after six months.
- One family member can perform this puja on behalf of the entire family.
- A Brahman can perform this puja on your behalf.

Putra Kameshti Yagam is performed in a Yagashala near the Agni Theertham. It is advisable to take a holy dip at Agni Theertham before the puja. Auspicious days are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Auspicious Tithis are Panchami, Sapthami, Dasami, Dwadasi, and Purnima. Auspicious months are Karthika masam and Sravana masam. It is advisable to perform this puja before any medical treatment related to pregnancy. We provide all the necessary articles for the puja. The couple should come to the Yagashala with two coconuts and half a liter of ghee. We should perform this puja between 6 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. One should not perform this puja in the afternoon.
