As per the legend, Three Brahmin families, Kizhupuram, Karunad and Kaimukku are the trustees. One of the Brahmin family Kizhpurathillam very much disappointed as they have not blessed with a boy baby. They went on a spiritual journey to the Ganges to take a holy dip. Goddess appeared before him and advised him to adopt a child from Nampoothiri lady from Karunattillam. She also said that the lady will be blessed with two children. As instructed the family reached his native place and adopted the child and brought him up. One day while on his way back to home after taking a holy dip the palm leaf umbrella which he is carrying stopped at one point. Godman appeared before him and told him that the umbrella which is carrying holds divine powers. He instructed the Brahmin to perform poojas and asked him to install Goddess Saraswathi idol at Panachikadu. The Brahmin recovered the deserted Idol and installed and worshipped. Godman used to worship with his divine powers and this idol was replaced with new Idol.
