Kutralam temple History
As per the Legend, Lord Siva asked Saint Agastheeswara to reach south and balance the Earth. All Devas gathered at Mount Kailash on the occasion of Lord Siva and Parvathi wedding. On his request, Agasthya reached Trikoota Hills. He thought of entering Vishnu temple on the hills. The gatekeepers stopped him from entering the temple as Saint is Saivite. Agasthsya disguised himself as a Vaishnavite and entered the temple. He then touched the Lord Vishnu Idol which turned to Kutralanathar. The handprint is still visible on the Siva Linga.
Agasthya performed Abhishekam for years after converting the Idol. He used to perform Abhishekam with 64 Herbal items and Shanthanathi Oil Palam. The same Abhishekam performed even today.
From the inscriptions, it is known that this temple was built before 5 BC. This temple was built by the Chola King Raja Rajan. This temple was later renovated by the Pandya Kings.
