The temple allows marriages during its opening hours. Tying knots is allowed in the temple. Outside the temple, decorations and catering services are permissible.

Thirunageswaram Temple Marriage Procedure

1. The bride and the bride’s family should necessarily be Hindus.
2. The Bride must be 18 years and above
3. The groom and the groom’s family should necessarily be Hindus.
4. The Groom should be 21 years and above
5. Only Hindu arranged marriages are allowed at this temple.
6. The temple permits inter-caste Hindu arranged marriages.
7. A marriage Application has to be collected from the temple office by the Bride’s and Groom’s families
8. Any of the listed individuals can collect the form, i.e., the bride, the groom, the bride’s parents, or the groom’s parents.
9. The only payment required at the time of application submission is the marriage registration fee.
10. Interreligious marriages are not allowed in the temple.
11. Love marriages without parents’ acceptance are not allowed.
12. Decoration and catering services can be performed outside the temple.
13. A minimum of 1 to 2 months of booking is advisable.

Thirunageswaram Raghu Temple Legends

Legend says that Once Raghu bites Sukarma Son of Rishi Suseelar while he is playing, knowing this Rishi cursed Raghu to lose his powers. Raghu did pooja to the Siva Idols at three different places Thirupampuram, Thirukkudanthai Kizhkottam and Thirunageswaram at three different timings on a Sivaratri day as advised by Rishi Kasyapa. Lord Siva pleased with Raghu’s prayers and blessed him at this place

Lord Vinayaka did penance here for Lord Siva to attain the first pooja honour.

It is said that only after doing penance at this place,  Nandi attained Adhikara Nandeswara position.

Sage Bringi an ardent devotee of Lord Siva, did Pradaskhinam to the Lord Siva alone in the form a beetle and ignored Umadevi. Knowing the reason from Lord Siva on Bringi’s Pradakshinam cursed Bringi to lose flesh from his body. Sage was unable to stand without energy and fall to the ground. Siva angered with Umadevi’s act and asked her to perform penance at Senbaranya. (Senbaranya was with Senbaga Trees, also called Champak flower trees). During the penance, Goddess Lakshmi and Goddess Saraswathi accompanied her. Goddess Umadevi did the strict penance with fire all around her and rejoined Lord Siva at  Mount Kailas.

It is said that Lord Brahma in order to get rid of the sins, performed Brahmotsavam to the Siva during Karthika Masam and took a holy dip in the Pushkarni (temple tank) on the last Sunday of Karthika Masam.

Once Indra (God of Heaven) got attracted to Ahalya wife of sage Gautam. While Sage Gautam was off to the river to offer prayers to Sun. Knowing this Indra deceived Ahalya in the form of her husband. Sage got angered with Indra and Ahalya’s sinful act and cursed Ahalya to turn into stone until Lord Maha Vishnu decides her fate and also cursed Indra with 1000 eyes and foul smell from his body. Indra to get out of this foul smell did penance for Goddess GiriGujambigal at Shebaranya (Region with full of Senbaga trees (Champak trees) and regained his usual form.

It is also said that God Chandra worshipped Goddess Pirayani Amman (Parvathi Devi) on Karthika Pournami day.

As per legends, Sun God regained his limbs by taking a holy dip in the temple tank (Pushkarini) which were axed with a sharp weapon by his uncle Mayan.

Adisesha, Serpent king did penance here for Lord Siva for more energy to hold the Earth. Lord Siva along with Goddess Parvathi blessed Adisesha with more power.

Thirunageswaram Raghu Temple History

From the Inscriptions it is known that the temple was built during 4th – 9th century A.D by Chola Kings. It is believed that temple construction was fully completed sometime between 907 – 940 A.D, during the reign of Parantaka I of Chola Dynasty. This temple has four gopurams (temple towers). Spacious Dance Hall was built in the 12th century.

On the three days i.e 11th, 12th, 13th, during the month of Chithirai (Apr / May, changes as per Tamil Calendar), sun rays touch Naganantha Swamy inside the sanctum of Sanctorium. Surya Theertham and Naga Theertham are two sacred temple tanks located next to the Temple. It is said that Lord Siva created this Surya Theertham as requested by Sages.
