Suriyanar Koil Timings, Pooja, Darshan, Route information

Suriyanar Koil History

As per the Legend, Saint Kalavar did penance to please Navagrahas. Navagrahas were impressed with the strict penance and granted boon. On knowing, the “Adi Devas” angered at this and asked them, “What powers do you have in granting boons? you are assigned with only the duty of awarding good or bad to the humans based on their Karma”.

So Adi Devas cursed them. As they disobeyed the celestial laws and Navagrahas were doomed to become lepers and suffer the agonies of the curse. Navagrahas prostrated before the Devas and begged for their redemption from the curse. Pleased Adi Devas, asked them to perform penance at Arkavana near Tirumangalakudi in the Chola dynasty and advised them to take holy bath in the 9 Theerthas starting from the first Sunday of the Kirthika month and continue the same for the next 11 days succeeding Sundays. Also advised them to perform strict penance for Lord Siva without having food and take holy bath in the respective “Thirthas” on Monday mornings and offer prayers to Lord Siva and Goddess Umadevi at Tirumangalakudi and take curd rice on Erukka Leaves after prayer.

As advised, Navagrahas performed penance at the respective places and got relieved from the curse. The place where Navagrahas did penance is called Suriyanar Koil. This place has the Sthala Vruksha “Erukka Tree”. It is believed that worshipping Navagrahas and Lord Siva here will be relieved from diseases and disorders.

It is said that King Parikshith from Dwapara Yuga, offered prayers for the Sun here.

Suriyanar Koil Temple History

This temple was built during the reign of Chola King Kulothuna I between 1060 AD-1118 AD and later renovated by Vijayanagara Kings. It is believed that taking a bath in Surya Pushkarini (Temple tank) will relieve Dosha. Jnana Koopam temple tank is located inside the temple.

As per the legends, Sage Kalava Muni prayed Navagrahas for the cure from leprosy disease. Navagrahas granted the boon and Sage recovered from the disease. Angered Brahma Cursed Navagrahas to suffer from Leprosy disease. Navagrahas has to act as per the Karma but they cannot grant boon on their own. Navagrahas came down to the Earth and did penance for Lord Siva in Vellerukku Vahanam (Jungle filled with white flowers). Impressed Lord Siva appeared before them and granted the boon that each Graha will have their own place of worship.
