Venkatagiri Poleramma Jathara History

Venkatagiri Jathara was in place from 1714 AD. In 1917 AD, Cholera was spreading heavily in this region. Then Venkatagiri Raja performed Seethala Yagam and installed Astadhigbhandhan Yantras. In the year 1919 AD, Rajas performed Poleramma Jatara in a grand, From then on, Jathara was celebrated regularly by the devotees.

On Ghatotsavam day, Kummari community who lives at Venkatagiri Kummari Street prepares the Idol of Poleramma with Clay. Eyes will not be placed to the deity. This Idol will be taken out in a procession from Puttinill (Kummari street) to Mettinillu (In-law’s Home at Jeenigala Vari street), Chakali House. Eyes will be placed after reaching in-laws house. The deity will be kept outside in the street for two days, during this time devotees offer special poojas to the deity. After two days, the deity will go around the streets of the Vekatagiri followed by Nimarjan. Nimarjanam will be performed at a specially reserved place at Kaivalya river bed.

It is strictly followed that devotees who are inside town at the time of Chatimpu are not supposed to leave town till Jathara ends.

From 1992 onward, Jathara event was performed by AP Endowments department.

Jathara Procedure

Jathara 1st Chatimpu falls on the 1st wed after Vinayaka Chavithi and 2nd Chatimpu on the next Wed at 12 am.

Ghatotsavam will be performed on Sun, Mon and Tue.

Rajarajeswari Temple in Nellore

This temple was built in the year 1975 AD. The deity installed by Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati. Temple is known for Rahu Kala Deepam. It is believed that wishes will be fulfilled if the lemon-ghee lamp is lit during Rahu Kalam on every Friday for 18 weeks. Devotees used to lit lamps in the temple premises and perform pradakshinam to the deity.  Chandi Homam will be performed daily.

Navaratri festival will be celebrated in a grand during Sep/Oct months. Thousands of devotees throng temple on these holy days.

This temple was built by the King Pandya Bhupathi during 630 A.D. Later renovated by Chola rules during the 10th and 11th centuries. The interesting part of the construction is Vasantha Mandapam, which was built in the form of a chariot drawn by a pair of horses. Temple Mandapam was built on 100 pillars rock-cut corridor, pillars are beautifully carved with sculptures from the epics The Ramayana, The Maha Bharath, The Bhagavatham and The Siva Purana. Temple is facing towards North direction.

Mallam Subramanya Swamy Temple History

Once King Kullothunga Pandya Bhupathi who went to the forest for hunting saw the bamboo sticks which were grown over the anthill and wished to make a palanquin out of these sticks. Anthill was grown over Subramanya Swamy who was doing penance there for many years. The king who is not aware of the Subramanya Swamy’s penance ordered his servants to collect the bamboo sticks. Servants while cutting the bamboo sticks, unknowingly chopped Subramanya Swamy’s both the hands and blood starts oozing out of the ant-hill. Later in this night, Subramanya Swamy appeared in the King’s dream and ordered him to construct the temple to get rid of the committed sin. From then on the King used to offers his first prayer (pooja) to the Subramanya Swamy before starting their day.

The legend associated with Temple Corridor

The King handed over the responsibility of the temple corridor construction to the entrusted craftsman. This famous craftsman had a son who was young with high professional skills. He was in love with a girl and was about to visit her place. To impress her, he sculptured two stone horses along with wheels and used to turn the temple corridor with his power and skills. By this time his father came to know about his son’s act, the temple corridor already took 180-degree turn and about to ride away, so he broke the legs of the horses to stop the further movement. The father killed his son in anger for his son’s foolish act, then killed himself.

Legends associated with Mannarpoluru Temple

Mannarpoluru, a heritage site, with significant references to Jambavati’s wedding with Sri Krishna. It is the place where Sri Krishna defeated Jambavanth to procure Samanthakamani. It is mentioned in Brahmanda Purana that Sri Krishna fought with Jambavantha for 28 days. Hence this place got the name “Malla Hari Poru Vuru” (means the place where Lord Hari did Malla Yudham, a type of fight). Jambavatha presented Samanthakamani and his daughter Jambavathi to Sri Krishna. As time passed by, its name got changed to Mannarpoluru. This is the only temple in India dedicated to Jambavathi, Sathyabhama and Sri Krishna.

Another interesting story associated with this place, Lord Maha Vishnu deflated the bloated ego of Garuda.

Legend represents that people responsible for building this Heritage Temple as having sprung from Koundinya Rishi.

It was built in the 17th century by Bangaru Yadama Nayudu, in this place once famous for Malla Yodhas (wrestlers).

This temple was built by Chola King during the 10th century. This temple was in glory at the time of King Manuma Siddhi, who ruled Nellore in the 13th Century. In the 18th Century, Venkatagiri Raja gifted 5 villages to the Temple to support Temple rituals.

Apart from the Idols of Satyabhama and Jambavathi, the two consorts of Lord Sri Krishna, in this temple we can also find 9 feet Garuda Idol and 9.5 feet Jambavantha Idol, Idols of Sugreeva and Jatayuvu. The Idol of Jambavantha creating the illusion of shedding tears are bound to amaze the viewers. There is a temple within the compound dedicated to Lord Sri Rama.

Legends associated with Mulasthaneswara Swamy Temple

Tikkana Somayaji started Mahabharatha translation into Telugu only after offering prayers to the deity here.

The legend goes this way, There was a cattle baron by name Mukanti Reddy, who used to gaze on the rich grass in the forest. One day Mukanti noticed that one of his cows is not yielding milk and instructed cowherd to keep an eye on this cow and find out why it is not giving milk. The cowherd kept an eye on the cow and followed it when it moved away from the others. Cowherd noticed that cow is emptying its milk on an ant-hill. In a bit anger he raised his axe to beat the cow, a cow escaped from the cowherd’s axe but it hit the rock in the ant-hill from where the blood starts oozing out.

Cowherd in fear ran to his master and updated the same on this. Later in the night, Mukanti had a dream, where it is instructed by natural spirits to build a temple for this Shiva Lingam. As instructed, Mukanti built the temple, Thus the place came to known as ‘Mulasthana Ishwara’.

Talpagiri Ranganatha Swamy Temple Legends

The name ‘Talpagiri’ comes from the legend, which says that Adisesha took the form of a hill here when Lord Maha Vishnu descended to The Earth and rested here. ‘Talpa’ refers to the couch of the Serpent Adisesha on which Lord Vishnu reclines.

As per the legend, Lord Maha Vishnu wanted to visit Bhooloka along with His Consort, Goddess Sridevi, so He asked Adisesha to be the place of His residence while He stays at Bhooloka. Obeying His Master’s order, Adisesha took the form of a mountain in this place. Thus the place got the name ‘Talpagiri Kshetram’.

It is believed that when Sage Kashyapa performed Poundarika Yagna on the day of Ekadasi, Lord appeared and blessed him.

Talpagiri Ranganatha Swamy Temple History

This temple was built by Pallava rulers during 7th and 8th Centuries A.D. The rulers of Simhapuri contributed their part as well in building the temple. This temple was later developed by the King Raja Mahendra Varma in 12th Century A.D.

The main entrance gopuram is of seven-storied structure with excellent carvings. Gali Gopuram at the main entrance is of 70 feet high and has seven 10 feet of gold plated vessels on top of it called Kalisams.

About Talpagiri Ranganatha Swamy Temple

The Idol of The Lord Ranganatha inside the Sanctum Sanctorium, reclining on his conch of Adisesha is ten feet long; with Goddess Sridevi sitting on his chest and Lord Brahma sitting on a lotus rising from the Lord’s navel. At the Lord’s feet are 26-inch high deities of Sridevi and Bhudevi. In front of the main deity are the Utsava murthis (festival deities). There is also a four-handed seated deity of Goddess Sridevi called Ranganayaka Devi. One of the interesting things about the temple is that the idols face west towards the river penna, unlike most temples where the deity faces towards the East.

‘Sri Vishnu Sahasra Namavali’ (1000 different names of Lord Vishnu) are penned on the walls of Sanctum Sanctorium.

There is ‘Santhana Vriksha’, a tree which is believed to grant the boon of begetting children to childless couples. The women devotees tear a corner of their sarees, put their offerings in the pieces of cloth and tie them as swings to the tree. There is an underground tunnel beneath this tree which was once used by the sages to reach the temple. It is said that those who give their offerings at this place in ‘Kondi Kasuli Hundi’ can get rid of venomous bites of scorpions and snakes.

The second among the ‘Kavi Trayam’ (Trinity of Poets), Tikkana Somayaji translated the final 15 chapters of the epic Mahabharath into Telugu in this Temple.

It is quoted in ‘Aranya Kanda’ of the epic Ramayana that Lord Rama visited this place as part of this sojourn. There are caves names as ‘Aswathama caves’ here where it is believed that Aswathama still lives as an immoral being, doing penance for absolving his sins, following a curse from Lord Krishna for his actions of killing the sons of Draupadi clandestinely in the battlefield of Mahabharatha.

Legends of Chengalamma Temple Sullurpeta

Once upon a time, that is about 10th century at Nellore district beside Kalangi river, few cow taker while swimming noticed Goddess idol, immediately they rushed to the village to inform all. Further, villagers reached the place to collect the idol, to their surprise all their efforts in moving idol went vain. Next day with all the hope they approached the idol and noticed that idol is facing towards the south and was standing straight. Only after performing poojas, they were able to lift the Idol. Idol was carried to the current place and installed it here.

The goddess at earlier days used to called as Tenkali (Dakshina Kali) later the name Tenkali replaced by Chengali and then to current name Chengalamma. Then the village formed around this temple and named it as Chengali Peta. During the British ruling, they changed the name to Sullurpeta. However, there is another version of Sullurpeta, people residing since ages used to say that, at the time of Brahmotsavam which happens once in 7 seven, during this time “Sudimanu” will round around the Temple hence this place is called as Sullurpeta.

This temple was built by the people from Balija caste so they are performing Nithya Archana to the Goddess and the ritual follows.

The interesting story associated with Chengalamma Temple Sullurpeta

400 years back, villagers tried to build the door for the temple, at that time Goddess appeared in their dream and instructed them that she is here to give blessings to the pilgrims at all times, hence the trials for making doors should be withdrawn and temple should be opened for 24 hours. By following Goddess instructions, the villagers left the temple opened for 24 hours.

Chengalamma Thalli and her Idol in the temple faces the sea. Goddess Chengalamma has enormous powers, ISRO scientists visit Sri Chengalamma Parameswara for blessings before launching any satellite.
